Bearing Witness: Gaza’s Omari Mosque in Script and Image

OMM_D0036_002.JPG

This digital exhibit features a rare 14th-century Islamic manuscript from the Omari Mosque Library in Gaza, Palestine, along with three related visual and cartographic artifacts. The collection highlights the intellectual, religious, and architectural legacy of Gaza’s Omari Mosque, a site that has recently faced threats of destruction and loss amid the ongoing Israeli genocide in Gaza. The exhibit emphasizes themes of cultural memory, archival endangerment, and the tangible effects of military incursions on heritage sites. Visitors are encouraged to explore Gaza’s layered history through objects that are delicate, dispersed, and at risk of permanent erasure. By offering rich contextual information and provenance, the collection aims to support research, education, and the remembrance of Gaza’s endangered cultural heritage.

Enlisting Miffy in the Fight for Palestine: An Exhibit

IMG_0669 3.jpeg

This exhibit explores the political appropriation of popular children's book and cartoon characters by activists and artists in the Free Palestine movement, specifically through the example of Dick Bruna's "Miffy" (1955). This introductory collection includes the primary object of a Free Palestine pin designed by Wasielah Noor featuring the character Miffy, which is supplemented and contextualized with additional supplementary items including a Reddit post by @stefan-ingewikkeld and an article by Rebecca Weisser for Spectator Australia. This collection aims to illustrate the politicization of popular cute icons, the employment of copyrighted imagery for activism, and the aesthetics of political movements.
