Title
Head Tax Certificate of Wong Sun Yee
Subject
Chinese Canadians; Immigration; Chinese head tax; Government records; Immigration documents; Discriminatory laws--Canada: Race Discrimination
Description
Digitized head tax certificate issued to Wong Sun Yee by the Canadian Department of Immigration and Colonization on February 13, 1924. Although it appears to be a routine administrative record, the certificate was part of a discriminatory documentation system used to regulate and restrict Chinese migration in Canada. In this exhibit, the certificate is presented as evidence of how exclusion was enforced through paperwork rather than as a neutral bureaucratic artifact.
