Description
B&W press photograph of Eichmann during his trial in Jerusalem. Eichmann is seated alone in a specially constructed bulletproof glass booth, wearing a suit, tie, and earphones to hear translation of the court proceedings. His expression appears tense and unsmiling. This widely circulated image became one of the most iconic photographs in Israeli history and a powerful symbol of postwar justice and memory. Eichmann, a high-ranking SS officer and key architect of the Holocaust, was captured by Israeli Mossad agents in Argentina and brought to trial for crimes against humanity and war crimes. His trial was one of the first internationally televised court proceedings and marked a turning point in public engagement with Holocaust testimony. Eichmann was found guilty and executed in 1962 and the only civil execution ever carried out by the State of Israel.
